Fix Google Apps on Huawei after EMUI 9 Update

People using Huawei phones and have just updated to EMUI 9.0.1 face issues with Google apps. Most of the Google apps are not even opening up. Some of them are not working correctly. The same is the matter with the Google Play Store. Updating to EMUI 9 also results in a crash of Google Play services. Update 23.03.2021: If Google Apps on your Huawei Phone have started to crash randomly from last night. Use the method below to fix it:

You are not alone if you are experiencing random Google App crashes on your Huawei phone. Thousands of users have reported this issue, and we have found a working solution.

  1. First of all, go to the Settings menu of your Huawei Phone.
  2. Go to Apps and Notifications; it’s called “Application” in older smartphones.
  3. Now tap on “See All Apps”.
  4. Now, in this menu, look for Android System Webview and tap on it.
  5. If it is not visible, tap on the three dots in the top right corner and tap “Show System.”
  6. Now tap on “Force Stop”. Either you will find the option to Uninstall Updates on the same menu.
  7. If it’s not visible, click on the three dots in the top right corner and click “Uninstall Updates.”
  8. That is it. Do not disable the Android System Webview App.

Some Android phones are running the old version of Android. Perform the same process for Google Chrome, clear its cache and uninstall its updates.

Huawei Google and Chinese Government: A Complex Love Story

The Chinese government has strict privacy policies. It does not allow any Google app or service in China. Along with Google Apps and YouTube, famous social media apps like Facebook and Twitter are banned from using the Public. The firmware and devices manufactured in the country are programmed not to entertain any Google services or Apps. There are workarounds for using Google apps and the Google Play store on Huawei Chinese devices. Suppose you have been using Google apps on EMUI 8. You must know about them already if everything has been working fine. Now, after the update to EMUI 9.0.1. Suppose the Google apps and Google Play Store have stopped working. You need to take care of that issue using the guide below.

Two types of people use Chinese devices meant for only China. Huawei devices for other countries have firmware different from the Google Play Store and all apps. People in China or those who got the phone from China. This guide is for those who got the phone from China.

Fix Google Apps on Huawei after EMUI 9 Update:

So, as you know, once you get Google Play Store and Google Play Services running on your Huawei Chinese phone, you can get any app you want. As you might know, several apps are not from Google but require Play Services for proper functioning.

This guide will use the Google GMS installer to install the Google Play Store and services from scratch on your Huawei phone. It will also fix Google Apps on Huawei after the Emui 9 update.

Steps to install Google Play Store using GMS installer to fix Google Apps on Huawei Chinese phone:

Before we move forward to the guide, you must ensure that your phone allows you to download and install apps from external sources; this option is turned off by default. You will have to turn it on from the settings. You can do that by following the steps below.

  1. First of all, you will have to go to Settings -> Security & Privacy.
  2. Enable “Download Apps from Unknown Sources”.
  3. Disable “Check Apps from External Sources”.

Fix Google Apps on Huawei after EMUI 9 Update

On EMUI 9. Unless you change the settings of external apps. You will not be able to install the GMS installer that we are going to use in the guide below:

  1. First of all, Download GMS Installer 1.2 from here. (Mirror)
  2. Once installed, your phone asks if you want to install the downloaded APK. Suppose your phone does not prompt you. Locate the APK and open it to install it.
  3. Allow Huawei Browser to install the GMS installer app. Even if you use another browser, you should allow the installation.
  4. Now, give all the permissions to the app. It will ask for 29 licenses.
  5. Now click on Install Anyway. Enable Trust in this app.
  6. Now, the app will open. Click on One Touch Installation.
  7. You will see a prompt asking that older Google Apps will be uninstalled, and your phone will restart. Tap on Install.
  8. Now, your phone will ask you to uninstall the Google Play Store. Let it uninstall.
  9. Once the uninstallation is finished, your phone will restart.
  10. You must install the Google Play Store and other Google Apps from the Huawei App Store.
  11. Locate and open AppGallery. (It is the official store for Huawei phones to download Apps)
  12. Now go to Home and search for Google Play Store in the search bar of App Gallery.
  13. You can install other Google Apps from there.
  14. Now, your Google Play store will work and ask you to enter your Google account details. It will also download and install Google Play Services on your phone.

Note: If you can’t find the Google Play Store in AppGallery. Go to Settings of AppGallery and change the region to “China”. Now, you will be able to find it.

Finally, you can download any app from the Google Play Store on your Huawei phone. It gets stuck if you encounter issues while downloading an app. Use this guide to fix it.

Update 26 September 2019:

A new Google installer is released for Huawei devices running on EMUI 10 or EMUI 9. It is hand-tested by a friend on Huawei Honor 8X and Mate 30, and it works perfectly to install the Google Play Store on Huawei phones. The installation process is the same. You can download it from here.

If you have tried the above method and all the other techniques presented on the web, your Huawei phone is still not running Google Apps after the EMUI 9 update. Then, it is time to roll back to EMUI 8. Till a working solution comes out.

This guide has worked for many people who have contacted me to thank me. Several people cannot fix Google Apps on Huawei after the EMUI 9 update, for those who cannot make it work. The best thing is to move back to EMUI 8.

Downgrading from EMUI 9 to EMUI 8 on Huawei phones is very simple, unlike other smartphones. All you need is a computer running on Windows or MAC and a data cable.

Guide on how to downgrade to EMUI 8 on Huawei:

  1. First of all, you will have to install HiSuite by Huawei. It is an official tool to flash the firmware and back up your phone’s data. All the things that can be done on the software of your Huawei phone can be done from HiSuite.
  2. Once you have installed HiSuite on your computer, open it.
  3. Connect your Huawei Phone to your computer using a data cable.
  4. Once connected, you will see the details of your phone on your computer.
  5. Now go to Updates and select the old version of EMUI. For example, you can choose EMUI 8.1.
  6. Install it on your phone.

You were once installed. You might have to manually install the Google Play Store on your Huawei phone. For that, you can use this guide. You can also install the Google Play Store by downloading its APK from the link above and installing it on your phone.

If installing APK does not work. You can use the first method described in this guide above, which uses the GMS installer to install Google Apps on your Huawei phones.

Google Apps in Huawei Phones for People Living in China:

For people living in China and trying to access Google services. This guide might not work for you. The ISP has blocked the DNS of Google services. You must use a paid and working VPN to bypass the network restrictions.

There are other countries as well that have banned specific apps. For instance, Pakistan has banned the use of Telegram in the country. All the apps used to make audio or video calls are prohibited in the UAE except for Zoom. Moreover, iOS devices manufactured for the UAE do not have Facetime. WhatsApp videos and audio calls do not work there. Also, you can not even use Skype for business if you live in the UAE.
